Library Of Alexandria, Egypt

Weekend Snapshot

I'm so sorry to all my WS buddies. I know I've not been posting any WS entries for the last 3 weeks. Here's one belated entry. This photo was taken while I was in Egypt last May. This is the Royal Library of Alexandria, Egypt. It was once the largest library in the ancient world. Beautiful isn't it? :)

Happy Monday & Happy WS! :)

Port Dickson Trip (2-3 Aug 2008)

As I was saying in my previous post, I went to Port Dickson during the weekend with my bunch of crazy friends. We started our journey about 7am and stopped by Malacca for brunch and a little ride on the new Menara Taming Sari. If you havent been up this tower, you should try. It is RM10/ person (outstation). Local will have to pay more at RM20/ person to enjoy this ride.

We stayed in The Legent Water Chalet, PD. The water chalet itself was awesome! We really love our chalet, which emphazise on being naked with the nature. Upon entering our chalet, you will be greeted with a huge bathroom. There is a glass on the bathroom floor enabling us to view the water from below. And an opentop roof above the shower enabling us to view the sky while taking shower. A wall with a door and two glass windows separating bathroom with our bedroom. Bedroom was awesome with complete facilities like coffee/tes complimentary, mini fridge, TV, extra pillows and bedsheet in the closet, kettle and a balcony.

The most fun part of this trip was relaxing ourselves in the jaquzzi. There were six of us in the jaquzzi. We talked, joked, laughed and letting go off our busy self. It was one of the best de-stress therapy. :)

Here's the photos from my trip. Enjoy! :)

My First Visit To Egypt - Part II of Part II

Taxi
Travelling around Alexandria is easy. Taxis are everywhere. But the taxi do not go by meter. So you have to set your own charges. If you think the journey is short, around 5mins, then just pay the driver LE5. If he ask for more, just give him another LE2. You have to be tough over there, if not he will ask you for more. Just give him LE2 and leave the taxi.

Horse Chariot
Besides taxi, you can also travel by horse chariot, which is easily spotted by the road side. The fare is quite expensive compared to taxi. For a 10mins journey by taxi, horse chariot will cost you LE50. Yes, we were taken aback when he told us the fare, because it will only cost us LE10 if we take a taxi. So darling negotiated the fare with the rider. From LE50, to LE20. Darling firmly said he will only give the max fare LE20. The horse chariot rider have no choice but to accept it. hehe.. good deal, right? :) Anyway, we gave him another LE5 for the good control of the chariot. It was really comfortable sitting in the chariot while enjoying the views, and the cool breeze sweeping through your face.

Tikka, The fishmarket Restaurant
A big restaurant by the seaside offering lots of seafood and unforgettable views. You get to select your favorite fish/ seafood and style of cooking. Served with lots of salad & bread, as well as its dippings. Yummy~licious!

Train from Alexandria to Cairo
Alexandria Train Station

On the last day, we took a train back to Cairo from Alexandria. It's a very old train station whereby they are still using the old huge ticketing machine. A second-class train [air-conditioned] like this will cost you LE25/ person. For tourists, it is advisable not to take the non air-conditioned train.

Remember to buy your ticket in advance because it maybe fully booked.

In our case, we did not purchase the ticket in advance. Silly us, we thought we could just purchase the ticket on the spot like KTM or LRT here! But was told that it was fully booked when we tried to purchase the 6.30am train. Blessedly, there are still places left in the 8.15am train. The journey is about 3hours. Refreshment was served on the train (at your own cost). There is a toilet in the train, but use it only if you really cannot

Giza Pyramids & Sphinx, Cairo
"What's Egypt without going to pyramids?" I thought. And since our flight was a midnight flight, it gave us plenty of time in the afternoon to walk around Cairo. But before that, we have to checked into a hotel to put our luggage & to freshen up ourselves. A room with two single beds at The Baron, Heliopolis Hotel will cost you USD110/ night.

Best sugarcane water! 3 glasses for LE2.

Police traffic at almost every junction of roads in Cairo.

Me on camel, darling on horse. It was tiring sitting on the camel! It looks alot easier to watch people ride on the camel than sitiing on it yourself.

View of Cairo from the pyramids.

My camel! :)

My First Visit to Egypt - Part I of Part II

My First Visit To Egypt - Part I of Part II

I was at Egypt for business last week (15-19 May). Me & my colleague who is also my partner in life, went there for an exhibition. We took a 12 hours direct flight via EgyptAir. Everything went on smoothly: the flight was on time & the sitting were comfortable. Darling slept through the whole flight. He even skipped the meals. He always does that! He said he doesn't like airplane food. Actually, it wasn't that bad. Seen here, is my first meal: Chicken curry & vege with white rice, chocolate moouse & fruits.

Upon arriving at Cairo Airport, our client's tour agents were there to drove us to Alexandria in their private pajero. Alexandria or better known as Alex is the second largest city in Egypt. It extends about 32 km (20 miles) along the coast of the Mediterranean sea in north-central Egypt.

Alex has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern ; its ambiance and cultural heritage distance it from the rest of the country although it is actually only 225 km. from Cairo.
You can witness this as you move from Cairo to Alex.

Weather was much cooler (30°C - 19°C) at Alex, with the wind blowing from the coastline. Check out the wave in the video. And hear the wind blowing.

We stayed in Plaza Hotel, which is conveniently situated next to a shopping mall. 2 mins walk is all it takes to the mall. Along this stretch, there are numerous hotels. You have to careful which one you choose. If you're unlucky, you may end up with an unpleasant hotel. My client has booked a room with El-Haram, a 3-star hotel situated somewhere along the stretch, but he checked out immediately upon seeing his room. According to his complaints, there are no air-cond and the sounds from the bustle street below was annoyingly disturbing. Later, he checked into a hotel few mins down the road with USD90/night, happily.

Blessedly, ours was okay. A double bed room like this will cost you about USD80/ night : with air-conditioned, TV and mini fridge. Strangely the egyptian do not use hair-dryers, a useful gadget to dry your hair. When I learnt that there is no hair dryer in the room, i panicked. [You see, i couldn't live without washing my hair daily. And every time after washing my hair, i must blow dry it. It has become a norm for me ever since i purchased my first hair dryer 7 years ago. So, i must have a hair dryer!!] So, I called the receptionist.
I said, "Good afternoon. I am calling from room 602. There is no hair dryer in my room. Can you get one for me?"
The gentleman replied ,"Unfortunately, we do not have any hair dryer here."
Couldn't believe my ears, I asked again, "You don't have hair dryer?!"
He replied, "We don't have hair dryer."
Realizing i heard the correct thing, disappointedly I said, "It's okay then. Thank you."
Hearing my disappointment, the gentleman said, "Wait, wait"
I waited a few seconds on the phone. I can hear him talking with his colleague in arabic.
He returned to the phone and said, "Oh okay, we have one hair dryer. This is ours but we do not use it now. You can have it. We will bring it to your room later."
I was thrilled, "Thank you so much". I thought how thoughtful & considerate he is! A thumbs up for him for the excellent way of handling guest's request. :)

The rate comes with free breakfast buffet for two. This is my favorite food over there: Fried sausages with green pepper & onion with tomatoes puree. It's yummier if taken with a fresh croissant like this. :)Unlike Malaysian who eat rice most of the time, peoples over here eat pastries. You can find all kind of pastries over here. Oh, and they love eating bread with dipping. If they were to eat rice, they would eat brown rice. [My observation might be wrong, so correct me if you know them better]

...to be continue...

Greetings from Bangkok

Sawasdee ka,

How is everyone? Yeah, I am now in Bangkok. Was here for business on the 4th March and am going back to Malaysia this friday. I hope everyone are doing fantastic, or at the least are doing good.

In these few months of busyness, I realized that I've neglected my friends in blogosphere and weekend snapshots. I am so sorry, guys! I really missed you guys but time does not permit me to reply to all my comments nor visit you guys. Moreover, there's still no internet connection at my new home, making it harder for me go online. >< Sorry, guys!

If you've noticed, I've been using facebook alot lately (since I came to BKK). There were about 400 requests on my facebook and now 300 left only. I am trying to clear all because once I am back home, I won't be able to go online as often. So, you guys will be receiving alot more requests from me. Be prepared, ya! ;)

When I was here for the first time, I didn't have time to buy stuffs for myself. It was all for friends & families. So being the second time here was more of myself. I've bought two bags, a GUESS wallet, a SALVATORE FERRAGAMO perfume and I got a "cross" tattooed at the back of my shoulder. It is a fruitful trip, and i hope my work will go smoothly tomorrow, then it'll be a successful trip! :)

I'll upload all the photos on facebook. Help yourselves, ya! *muaks* *muaks* :)

Mr. Bed Bug

When I was in Bangkok, I stayed in a 3-star hotel in Bangna. It has 20 floors and a moderate lobby with a big plasma TV. All their staffs were professional and understand English quite well, which has help me to feel more comfortable despite the different culture. The moment i stepped into my room, i thought, "Wow, this is great! Neat & clean room!" It has refrigerator, wardrobe, safe box, TV, hair dryer, queen bed, one-seater sofa, side coffee table and etc.. It's really not bad for 1200 bath a night. Great Deal!

Everything went on smoothly until the next morning when I noticed small red dots on my legs. It's not just red dots, it started to itch. I realized it was because of the bed bugs. I checked the bedsheet but it's all clean. Indeed it smells good too. How i wish i have a bed bug spray with me then! I was scratching my legs the whole night for the remaining days. At the end of the trip, i ended up with scarred legs and sleepless nights.

Blessedly the bed bugs did not crawl into my luggage and infest my bedroom. Or else I will have to steam clean my room to get rid of it.

Cameron Highlands For 3D2N

It's been quite a while since our last trip together. We had planned this trip a month ago and it was great to see everybody commited to this vacation by taking a day off from their work.

We went to Cameron Highlands, PAHANG, on Saturday (20/Oct) and came back on Monday (22/Oct). It was a relaxing vacation as most of the time, we stayed in our cozy little apartment playing mahjong and blackjack. Haha! Yeah, with my this bunch of guy friends, blackjack is inevitable in ALL our trips.

I was expecting freezing cold weather at night (as what i've experienced when i was there last 6-7 years ago) but it turn out to be just the same as in my air-conditioned room. However, if you are outside, the weather could be cooling and a little chilly at night.

singapore.roomsDB.net

singapore.roomsDB.net is a perfect website for those who would like to find or rent out a room in Singapore. There is no registration required and is completely free. All you need to provide is a valid email address.

roomsDB.net encourages landlords and tenants to deal with each other directly which i think is an excellent idea.

singapore.roomsDB.net is growing as days passes by. In the month of June 2007, it had more than 1000 unique visitors per day on average. That's freaky amazing.

[Inset Left] Sebastian is the (handsome) developer behind this website. He started this website because he have experienced difficulties in finding a room due to lack of a good website he can refer to. Besides singapore.roomsDB.net, he has also comes up with hongkong.roomsDB.net and taiwan.roomsDB.net.

Personally, i think he is really a nice person. He is giving all his knowledge into these websites and taking none in return. That is why i wrote this review FOC for him. By helping him, I've help others too (and myself). Now, i know where I can easily find a room to stay should my company kick me to work oversea in either these three places.

Day 2 & 3 (Last day) at Singapore - Biz Trip

All right, continue on with my biz trip: Day 2 at Singapore. It was very brief.

After meeting my agent and client, darling & I went to the famous Orchard Road. Singapore is still on sales! Everywhere I turn to, hangs the "Sales! Sales! Sales" tags.

I was behaving at my best, being able to resist all temptations coming my way, except for one. We were walking around Takashimaya, and passed by the section selling little snacks. There was this stall, selling all kinds of brownies. The first time we passed by, I was tempted to buy but didn’t make any move. As continue our window shopping, my mind couldn’t stop thinking about the yummy brownies. So, we walked back to the Brownie Stall and bought two types of brownies: One is their Best Seller: Chewy Gooey xxx Brownie @ S$2.80/each & xxx Raisin Brownie @ S$3.30/each. The Chewy Gooey xxx Brownie was really delicious. Exactly as named, it was chewy & gooey.

I regretted not buying a half dozen more to bring back to KL. *sigh* Remorse filled my heart as I journeyed back home on Wednesday evening. And till now, I am still thinking about ‘Her”.

Note: Actually wanted to buy for you to try, Sh'n, but your kor didn't want to go back Takashimaya on wed. *darn* really regret!!

Day 1 at Singapore - Biz Trip

Me and darling took 'First Coach' bus from Bangsar,KL at 7.30am and reached Novena Square, Singapore around 1.00pm. Bus ticket is @ RM40/person (KL-SIN) and RM60/person (SIN-KL). Bus was clean and the seating was comfy [Inset Left].

Upon arrival, we headed for lunch at Kopitiam foodcourt [Inset Right] in Novena Square. There are variaties of cuisines to choose from: Korean, Chinese, Japanese, etc..

[Inset Left] I had a Taiwan noodle, @ S$3.50. It tasted a little bit of sweet & spicy, with very thinly sliced chicken and garnished with mint leaves: Modlicious (Moderately Delicious).

[Inset Right] Darling had a set of black pepper beef (rice + soup) @ S$4.50. Those who like black pepper will love this. My darling finished everything till the end of the gravy.
After that, we took a cab to my uncle's place at Hume Avenue Park. On the way, we got into a minor accident. The cab that we took hit onto the back of another car. The other car was badly dented, and i've hurt my hand and head during the crash. Don't worry, it was just minor scratch & bump.
At night, my uncle brought us to Sakura buffet at Singapore Science Park, together with my auntie, his son Nicky and my auntie's mom. The buffet is @ S$24/person and it was Superlicious with wide variation of foods: prawns, mussels, scallops, salmons (raw & grilled), unagi, inari, few other sushis, baby octopus (our favourite!!), beef, tomyam, laksa, fried kuey teow, dim sum, desserts: konyaku jelly, black jelly (kuai lin kou), fruits, ice-cream (cookies & cream was yummy), and many more... My stomach was screaming for help at the end of my dinner. That's the bad thing about me: Loss of self-control when I see so many temptatious good foods.
